The importance of exercise in later life
As we get older, it’s important to keep moving if we want to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. There’s strong scientific evidence that shows those who exercise regularly have a reduced risk of developing life limiting complications such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia.
Build exercise into your lifestyle
The recommended amount of physical activity is two and a half hours of moderate exercise each week. This may seem like quite a lot but it’s much less daunting when you break it down into manageable chunks of perhaps half an hour on five days of the week. The NHS recommends moderate activity should raise your heart rate and increase your breathing and can include walking, ballroom or line dancing, playing tennis or even pushing a lawnmower.
Exercise from your armchair
At Allenbrook Nursing and Residential Home our professional carers endeavour to help all our residents exercise with a whole host of different activities. One of the most popular is our Armchair Exercise as it's perfect for those who may struggle with mobility (or just love their sofa!). This involves sitting up straight in a chair with core engaged and feet placed firmly on the floor while we take you through some simple and gentle exercises.
Take a walk among nature
Our friendly care staff are very proud of our mature and beautiful landscape garden which is a fantastic place to not only get out into nature but also for our residents to exercise. From wandering around the wheelchair friendly paths admiring the colourful hanging baskets to practising yoga on the lawn, we also encourage visitors to take a turn with their loved ones out in the garden.
