Funding Care in Hampshire
Helping a loved one move into a care home can be a stressful time for everyone involved, in particular, understanding the financial aspects of paying for care can make the whole process feel overwhelming.
As individual circumstances affect the type of financial support available, it can be a minefield trying to work out how you will be able to pay for your loved one's care.
Where To Start?
Online research will give you an understanding of the options available.
Visiting your local authority's adult services website is a great place to start, as it should hold up-to-date information reflecting local funding opportunities and rules.
For individuals living in Hampshire, we recommend you visit the Hampshire Adult Services website.
Additionally, the national charity Age UK can provide detailed and independent advice on choosing and paying for a care home.
Finally, MoneyHelper, provided by the Money & Pensions Service, is a great resource with a wealth of information on the various ways to fund care.
Finding Professional Advice
Seeking professional, independent financial advice is highly recommended when searching for a care home.
In some cases, a financial product known as an immediate care plan annuity may help cover long-term costs.
We recommend using The Society of Later Life Advisors to find a suitably qualified advisor in your area. The financial advisors listed on this database are accredited by the organisation, so you can be confident when choosing one that you will receive advice from a suitably qualified advisor.
Care Fees At Allenbrook
An agreed weekly fee will be confirmed prior to admission and included in the contract provided. We require the balance of the first month’s fees to be paid on or before arrival and ongoing payments to be paid on the 1st of each month by bank transfer.
We understand that there can sometimes be delays in accessing funds/investments at short notice, so if you have any concerns about being able to pay care invoices promptly, please discuss this with the Home Manager or Administrator as soon as possible.
NHS Funded Nursing Care
Our fees are exclusive of any NHS Funded Nursing Care (FNC) contribution. In cases where a resident is assessed as having nursing needs, the FNC payment will be paid directly to the home to cover the cost of these additional needs. This avoids the need for us to increase the resident’s fee to reflect the additional care required.
NHS Continuing Care
Residents with complex needs may be entitled to NHS Continuing Care funding. All residents referred for an FNC assessment will also be screened for NHS Continuing Care as part of this process and may qualify for a full assessment if they meet the criteria for this. You can learn more about the criteria for this funding on the Hampshire NHS website.
Local Authority Funding
In cases where a resident’s finances are likely to reach a point where they are no longer able to fund their own care, please let us know well in advance so we can advise you on the appropriate next steps.
In most cases, local authorities will assist with funding once savings are below a nationally set capital threshold (currently £23,250). However, due to the time required for assessments to be completed, it’s essential to make contact with Adult Services promptly, when savings fall to £40,000.
Other Costs At Allenbrook
Any other costs, such as hairdressing, chiropody, and shop purchases, are not included in the care fee for our home. These additional services will be invoiced separately.
We’re happy for these to be paid by bank transfer or in-person to a member of the admin/reception team.
